Q SURVEY OF PROFESSIONALISM Purpose: Regardless of the field you are in, it is important to know “what is out there” in reference to sample resumes, the types of job postings, and some potential companies’ websites. This is important knowledge to have for a variety of reasons, but most importantly, this will influence the creation of your resume and cover letter, as well as your job search. Instructions: This assignment has three parts. For each part, draft a one-to-two paragraph response to what you learned and describe how you will apply it to the creation of your own resume and cover letter. Part One: Resume Analysis The goal for this part of the assignment is to review sample resumes in your field to assess the following: • Type of resume (functional or chronological) versus type of position (entry level, mid-level, etc.) • Headings the documents have in common • Layout (How much white space versus text? How large was the name? The heading? etc.) • Certifications listed • Skills listed • Types of work experience listed • Types of educational experience listed • Other common features you think are important (Be specific: for example, a graphic arts resume may be more visual than text-based, etc.) Part Two: Job Posting Analysis The purpose of this part of the assignment is to browse a variety of job postings in your field, and select one to analyze (Note: this posting can also be used to write your resume and cover letter). Complete the following to understand the language you should use as you create your job application documents: • Look for keywords that describe the position • Look for keywords that describe the type of employee the employer seeks to fill the position • Note any terms or qualifications that jump out at you • Note any specific documents, specifications, skills that are unique • Highlight any other information you think is important Part Three: Website Analysis The goal of this final part of the assignment is to view a variety of websites for companies in your field to assess the following: • Keywords in their mission/goal statements that reflect their values • The work culture • The qualities they look for in their employees
